Think about your feet for a second. No really, just think about them. Feet are a part of the body that we use every single day. We walk on them, pound on them, twist and turn and sit on them. And yet, other than the cute or functional footwear we buy for them, we don’t think too much about them.

That is, until they refuse to let us ignore them because of the pain they cause us. The pain most commonly associated with the arches and heels of the feet is plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a layer of tissue that runs along the arch of the foot between the forefoot and the heel. Due to a variety of factors like poor footwear, naturally high or low arches, weight gain, or varied exercise without proper support, this tissue can shorten and tighten. When you then try to stretch that tissue, like when you step out of bed barefoot in the morning, the result is pain through the arch and heel.

One of the best ways to combat plantar fasciitis is with proper footwear. That said, if the arches of your feet are low or collapsed, even supportive shoes may not be enough. Even if you’re not yet experiencing pain, it’s important to realize that the arches of your feet are the foundation of your body. When the arches don’t have proper support, the ankles tend to roll, the knees twist and the pelvis tilts. All of this from those pesky little feet that we neglect.

The best way to manage plantar fasciitis, or to generally provide good support to your feet is with a custom orthotic. A custom orthotic is designed to provide support to your specific foot, and can also be moved between different shoes for consistency.

How to Relieve Hip Pain

Hip pain is a common symptom of alot of my patients.  I have had great success in treating many contions that cause hip pain and I have discovered some simple exercises and stretches along with my adjustments that can help eliviate hip pain.

First exercise is to sit on the edge of a hard chair.  Make sure you feet are flat on the floor and your knees are at a 45 degree angle.  Put a ball about the size of a soccer ball between your knees and gently squeeze the ball for a total of 5 reptitions.  If you have no trouble with the 5 repetions, repeat 5 more and notice how you now have better range of motion in your hips when you stand up.

This is a great exercise to do before running, as it helps hips to properly rotate before the impact of the run.

A great stretch to do for hip pain is to lay on your back and bring your right knee up and hug it into your left shoulder.  You should feel the stretch in your buttocks.  Hold this stretch for 30 seconds and repeat on the opposite leg.  If  you feel a pinch in the front of your leg when doing this strech, it means you have a pelvic misalignment and other muscles are “pinching” and you need a chiropractic adjustment which will relieve this.

What is Reflux or Hiatal Hernia?

Reflux is a common condition where digestive contents from the stomach get pushed back up into the esophagus and even up into the mouth.  Other symptoms may include a bitter taste in the mouth, pressure in the chest, pain in upper belly area, or sore throat.  Some patients have had loss of voice or laryngitis due to irritation to the vocal cords.

Reflux is most commonly caused from a hiatal hernia.  This is a condition when the stomach gets pushed up through the diaphragm and herniated into the esophagus, thus sending it’s contents backward or up into the esophagus causing unpleasant symptoms.

At Thrive Chiropractic we have treated many patients with this condition successfully. Treatments can include, digestive enzymes, probiotic and manual treatments to the stomach to pull the stomach back to it’s normal position.  These treatments are all natural and they allow the body to recover and repair itself to begin normal digestive processes.

Over the counter digestive aids are often used for “heartburn” or “reflux”, but the use of these products causes the body to become confused and eventually the body will become dependent on these aids.  For example when a product is taken to lower stomach acid, it causes the body to not be able to digest the food properly in the stomach, therefore causing digestive issues further down in the digestive tract and then constipation, diarrhea, etc becomes the new issues and reflux will still continue to happen at the next meal.

Ear Pain, Ringing & Vertigo

I have recently been treating a lot of patient’s with ear problems.  These problems range from muffled ears, full ears, ringing in ears, vertigo, and pain in the ear.

This time of year is common for ear troubles.  This is due to a variety of factors such as allergies, change in pressure systems (weather) and food sensitivities (ie. dairy intolerance).

I have had great success in treating patients with ear troubles for many years now, and I use a variety of techniques depending on the problem of the ear or neck.

Different treatments include a soft tissue technique of draining the eustation tube to help it clear the ear.  Quite often the eustation tube (tube that drains the ear and sinuses)  is blocked with ear wax or it can also be pinched in tight muscles of the neck.

Chiropractic adjustments may also be done to realign the bones in the neck which muscles are attached to and can pinch the eustation tube.  Also direct adjustments of the ear helps to realign the eustation tube to allow proper draining.

Home treatments are also recommended to help ear draining which include moist heat applied to the ear and neck for 10 minutes per ear two times a day.  The moist hear can be a wet towel or rice bag that has been micro waved for warming.

Numbness & Tingling in Hands When Sleeping

Quite often in my practice I get a patient who comes in with numbness and tingling in their hands when they sleep or lay down.  This is a very treatable condition with Chiropractic care and I have had great success with treating it.

First is to determine where the pinching is coming from.  The numbness is caused by a pinched nerve either in the neck, upper back, arm or wrist.  A physical and orthopedic examination is performed to determine where the problem is and sometimes x-rays may also be necessary.

Treatments to relieving the pinched nerve is done by providing adjustments to the neck, upper back, shoulder or wrist and  it is very effective treatment.

Also muscle work, stretching and having the patient wear a wrist brace at night assist in the recovery of the numbness and tingling.

Acupuncture can also be a very effective treatment for more chronic or complicated cases.

Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain is a common problem that I treat in my practice on a daily basis.  Many shoulder problems can start out with no apparent injury or cause.  Some shoulder problems are past injuries that have not been properly treated or rehabilitated and other shoulder problems are due to bad habits or poor posture.  Alot of the shoulder problems I have encountered lately have been due to poor postures when at computers and side sleepers that do not have the correct size pillow for the width of the shoulders.

Since the shoulder is a ball and socket joint, it puts the shoulder at a bigger risk for injury and can be very frustrating if not treated appropriately and quickly.

Shoulder problems are treated a variety of ways depending on the nature of the injury to the shoulder.  In most cases an adjustment to the shoulder is applied if the shoulder is not articulating properly in the joint.  Often the neck is also involved with the shoulder and I will always check the relationship between the two to make sure they are working together appropriately.

Stretching, massage and strengthening are a must for the proper healing of the shoulder and this treatment is done on a case by case basis for my patients.

Some general recommendations are to sleep on your back.  This will help decrease the impact on the shoulder until you can have a professional check for the right size pillow for you.

Also, strengthening of the musculature on the upper and middle back is essential to prevent forward rolling or “rounding” of the shoulders.  This is a common presentation when someone has a job with a lot of computer work.  Seated rowing machine and lat pull downs are a great exercise to do if you have access to a gym.

Stretches that are helpful are to include stretching of the pectoral or “pecs”.  These are stretches that you perform by laying face up on a foam roller with the foam roller running the length of the spine, making sure that the head is supported by the foam roller.  Then put the arms up in the “goal post” postion to stretch the pec muscles.  Hold this position for 30 seconds and do this twice a day 2-3 times a week.

Plantar Fasciitis & Chiropractic

The plantar fascia is located on the bottom of the feet and it is what forms the arch of our feet.  This fascia allows cushioning as we walk and protects the bones in our feet.

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation and irritation of the plantar fascia which can get very irritated by repetitive motions such as running, jumping or increased activity.

Many people have symptoms after sitting for a period of time or in the morning when they go to stand on their feet and feel a “burning” or “tearing” pain in the bottom of the feet.  Pain can also be in the heel, ankle, and tingling or numbness in the toes.

Treatment for plantar fasciitis at our office as been very successful by adjusting the bones in the bottom of the feet, ankle and toes.  This allows the foot to stretch as needed and release pressure when repetitive motions are increased.  Massage is also done on the feet, ankle and toes to relieve tension on muscles, or tendons that have over compensated due to strains on the joints.
