Holistic Approaches to Remedy Seasonal Allergies

Seasonal Allergies

As we finally welcome the much anticipated arrival of spring here in the Minnetonka area, many of us also face the challenge of seasonal allergies that can bring on a host of uncomfortable symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, plugged ears and itchy eyes.

People often turn to over-the-counter allergy medicine for relief, and while these medications may temporarily alleviate symptoms, they can also come with some negative side effects such as drowsiness, dry mouth, and dizziness. Additionally, long-term use of some of these medications has even been linked to an increased risk of dementia, especially in older adults.

As a chiropractor, I believe in taking a holistic approach to wellness, and that includes exploring natural remedies for seasonal allergies. Fortunately, here at Thrive Chiropractic, we carry several natural supplements that are all excellent options for reducing inflammation and supporting the immune system to help alleviate allergy symptoms without the negative side effects.

Additionally, acupuncture to the sinus region along with regular adjustments and manual therapies, particularly to the cervical spine, ears and jaw area can provide quick relief by improving drainage and removing impediments to the bodies natural healing abilities. Read on for more detail on these adjustments as well as the supplements I personally take and recommend to my patients.

Supplements:

Histoplex

Histoplex is a supplement that contains a blend of herbs and nutrients that support the respiratory system and help reduce allergy symptoms. This supplement can help stabilize the mast cells in the body, which release histamines and cause allergy symptoms. Histoplex can help alleviate symptoms like sneezing, congestion, and runny nose.

Aller Pro

Aller Pro is another herbal blend that we carry at Thrive Chiropractic. This supplement contains a combination of quercetin, bromelain, stinging nettle, and other herbs that have anti-inflammatory and antihistamine properties. Aller Pro can help alleviate symptoms like runny nose, itchy eyes, and sneezing.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that plays a role in the immune system. Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to an increased risk of allergies and asthma. Taking a vitamin D supplement can help boost the immune system and reduce allergy symptoms.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps reduce inflammation and boosts the immune system. It has been shown to reduce histamine levels, making it an excellent supplement for allergy sufferers. Vitamin C is found in many fruits and vegetables, including citrus fruits, bell peppers, and strawberries. Taking a supplement can help increase your intake to a therapeutic level.

Probiotics

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for your gut health. They help keep your digestive system healthy, which in turn can boost your immune system. A healthy immune system can help reduce allergy symptoms. Probiotics are found in fermented foods like yogurt, kimchi, and kefir. However, taking a probiotic supplement can help ensure you are getting a sufficient amount. We carry several types of probiotics here at Thrive Chiropractic. Give us a call or ask about probiotics at your next appointment so I can help narrow down which probiotic will best meet your individual needs.

Ear Adjustments:

Chiropractic ear adjustments involve gentle manipulations of the ear, jaw, and neck to help alleviate pressure and tension in the ear. This may involve a specific tugging techniques on the earlobe to realign the bones in the ear and/or gentle massage to improve fluid drainage and reduce inflammation.

The entire process is typically painless and may take only a few minutes to complete. By restoring proper alignment and function to the ear and surrounding structures, chiropractic ear adjustments can help to alleviate symptoms of seasonal allergies, such as ear pain, itching, and pressure. Patients may experience some relief from their allergy symptoms immediately after the adjustment or may require a series of treatments for long-lasting relief.

Acupuncture:

Acupuncture to Sinuses

Finally, acupuncture can be a natural and effective treatment option for people who suffer from seasonal allergies. By inserting fine needles into specific points on the body, acupuncture can help to regulate the body’s immune response and reduce inflammation.

Studies have shown that acupuncture can relieve symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes, as well as improve overall quality of life for allergy sufferers.

Additionally, acupuncture has been found to have minimal side effects and can be used in conjunction with other allergy treatments for added benefits. We are thrilled to announce the return of acupuncture treatment at Thrive Chiropractic just in time for allergy season!

As we move forward with this season, let us prioritize our health and wellness by exploring natural remedies for seasonal allergies. By taking a proactive approach to managing allergy symptoms, we can enjoy all the beauty and excitement that spring has to offer.

Be well!
