What is Reflux or Hiatal Hernia?

Reflux is a common condition where digestive contents from the stomach get pushed back up into the esophagus, and even up into the mouth.  Other symptoms may include a bitter taste in the mouth, pressure in the chest, pain in upper belly area, or sore throat.  Some patients have experienced a loss of voice or laryngitis due to irritation to the vocal cords.

Reflux is most commonly caused from a hiatal hernia.  This is a condition when the stomach gets pushed up through the diaphragm and herniated into the esophagus.  As a result, it sends its contents backward or up into the esophagus, causing unpleasant symptoms.

At Thrive Chiropractic in Minnetonka, we have treated many patients with this condition successfully.  Treatments may include digestive enzymes, probiotics, and manual treatments to pull the stomach back to its normal position.  These treatments are all natural, allowing the body to recover, repair itself, and begin normal digestive processes.

Be aware of over the counter digestive aids that are often used for “heartburn” or “reflux”.  The use of these products causes the body to become confused and eventually become dependent on them.  For example, when a product is taken to lower stomach acid, it decreases the body’s ability to digest the food properly in the stomach.  Consequently, it causes digestive issues further down in the digestive tract such as constipation, diarrhea, etc. They become a new problem, while reflux continues to happen at the next meal.
