My initial experience with chiropractic was following a rugby injury in college. While I was sent to the chiropractor for a specific injury, I quickly learned how important chiropractic care was for keeping me healthy and active in my sport.
As a chiropractor, I have had the opportunity to work with a variety of populations from newborns to seniors. However, it became evident very early in my career that I have a particular interest in taking care of youth athletes. Being able to help young athletes recover quickly from injury, enhance their performance and prevent injury is truly one of the most satisfying parts of my job.
Chiropractic care focuses on optimizing the function of the joints in the body. Housed in these joints are nerves that control all tissues, organs and cells of the body. When those joints are not moving freely or with ideal function, the nerves that navigate through these joints are unable to do their job effectively. This can result in pain, muscular imbalances and altered movement in the body.
For youth athletes, maintaining appropriate function in the body can be a critical part of success in their sport for many reasons. First, when the joints in the body are functioning as intended, it allows for the body to perform at its maximum level. Lack of function results in compensation, and these patterns set the body up for injury. Therefore, chiropractic care works to optimize performance and is critical in prevention of injury.
At Thrive Chiropractic, we take the time at the initial exam to assess how the body is moving and functioning and explore any underlying structural issues present with x-ray. This information allows us to devise a treatment plan specific to each patient based on their situation. If there’s a youth athlete in your life who is looking to perform at their best and avoid injury, we would love to be a part of their care team!
