The importance of gut health is our focus this month at Thrive Chiropractic in Minnetonka. The term “gut health” is just about everywhere you turn these days, however few know what that means or why it’s so important. When we use that term, we are referring to keeping the internal environment in your gut as healthy as possible.The environment in the gut is referred to as the microbiome. It consists of over 1,000 species of bacteria, each of which play an important role in your body. Because we sometimes eat things we shouldn’t, are exposed to chemicals daily, and neglect to introduce good bacteria into the gut, the microbiome gets worn down. As a result, many people experience significant effects on their health including:
- Decreased immune function resulting in increased frequency in illness, allergic response, inflammation, etc.
- Weight gain
- Altered mood and brain health
- Compromised heart health
- Gut issues ranging from acid reflux and indigestion to constipation and diarrhea
- Healthy hair and scalp
The good news is, there are things we can all do to promote gut health in ourselves.
